Kaal Sarp Dosha CalculatorKaal Sarp Dosha (or Kaal Sarp Yoga) forms when all seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — are hemmed between the shadowy nodes Rahu and Ketu. The chart is, in effect, "swallowed" by the serpent formed by the Rahu-Ketu axis. There are twelve named types depending on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy.
It is purely a matter of the birth positions of Rahu and Ketu relative to the other planets. A partial Kaal Sarp (where one planet sits outside the axis) is milder and quite common.
The dosha is associated with a sense of obstacles, delays, and sudden ups and downs — a feeling that effort meets more resistance than it should, or that success arrives later than expected. Rahu and Ketu are karmic points, so classical astrology frames Kaal Sarp as a karmic pattern to work through rather than a fixed curse.
Common remedies include Kaal Sarp Dosha Nivaran Puja (often performed at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik), worship of Lord Shiva and the Naga (serpent) deities, reciting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, Rahu-Ketu shanti rituals, and charity on Saturdays. As always, remedies should follow a full-chart reading, since a well-placed Rahu or Ketu changes the picture entirely.
The intensity is greatly reduced when the planets involved are strong or well-placed, when benefics aspect Rahu or Ketu, or when it is only a partial formation. Many highly accomplished people have Kaal Sarp in their charts, which argues strongly against reading it as a simple negative.
A persistent myth is that Kaal Sarp guarantees failure or misfortune — it does not, and reputable astrologers note it is over-diagnosed and over-monetized. Treat any reading that leads immediately to an expensive mandatory puja with healthy skepticism.
