The Moon's phase is the angle between Sun and Moon at your birth — from the conjunction of the New Moon through the waxing build to Full, and the waning release back to New. Western lunar astrology reads the eight phases as eight temperaments: waxing souls build and gather; waning souls distill and release; Full Moon natives live in relationship and visibility; New Moon natives begin cycles others complete.
The Vedic tradition took this idea further two millennia ago: each thirtieth of the lunar cycle is a tithi with its own deity, quality, and auspiciousness, and the Moon's nakshatra outweighs its phase. From the angular separation of the Sun and Moon at your birth moment: 0° is New Moon, 90° First Quarter, 180° Full Moon, 270° Last Quarter, with crescent and gibbous phases between.
