The Chinese zodiac cycles twelve animals against five elements in a sixty-year rhythm — but the year turns at Chinese New Year, a new moon that falls anywhere from late January to mid-February. Lookup tables that assume January 1 misassign millions of winter birthdays; this calculator computes the actual new moon astronomically, the same way we compute everything on this site.

The zodiac year begins at Chinese New Year (a new moon between January 21 and February 20), not January 1. If you were born in January or early February, your animal may belong to the previous year.
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water rotate in a ten-year cycle (two years each), combining with the twelve animals into the full sixty-year cycle — so a Water Rat differs from a Fire Rat.
