Around 1,700 years ago the two zodiacs pointed at the same stars. Since then, the slow wobble of Earth's axis — precession — has drifted them about 24° apart. Western astrology stayed anchored to the seasons (tropical), so 0° Aries is always the spring equinox; Vedic astrology stayed anchored to the fixed stars (sidereal). Neither is an error; they are two different reference frames for the same sky.
Practically: roughly three out of four people have a different Sun sign in each system, and the Vedic tradition doesn't lead with the Sun sign anyway — your Rashi (Moon sign) is your primary sign for horoscopes, transits, and Sade Sati. The Western tropical zodiac and Vedic sidereal zodiac are offset by about 24° due to the precession of the equinoxes. Since each sign spans 30°, most people shift back one sign in the Vedic system.
Both are internally consistent frameworks measuring different things — the tropical zodiac tracks the seasons, the sidereal zodiac tracks the fixed stars. Astronomers use neither for personality; astrologers of each tradition use their own.
