Vedic numerology assigns each digit to a graha, which is why the numbers carry the temperament they do. If you know the planet and want the number, read this table the other way round.

So Shani (Saturn) is number 8, Surya (Sun) is 1, and Mangal (Mars) is 9 — the mapping most commonly used in Indian numerology.
Mulank (root number, also called psychic number) comes from the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5, so Mulank 5. Born on the 9th: it is already single, so Mulank 9. It describes how you experience yourself, and is said to weigh most heavily in the first half of life.
Bhagyank (destiny number, also called life path) uses the complete date. For 23 August 1990: 2+3 + 0+8 + 1+9+9+0 = 32, then 3 + 2 = 5, so Bhagyank 5. It describes the direction a life tends to take, and is traditionally read as growing stronger with age. Where the two differ, most practitioners give Bhagyank the greater weight for long-run questions and Mulank for temperament.
A note on 11, 22 and 33: many schools stop reducing at these “master numbers” rather than taking them to 2, 4 and 6. Others reduce them anyway. Both conventions are in use, so a calculator giving you 2 where another gives 11 is not necessarily wrong — it is following a different rule.
