A kundli is a birth chart. It records where each of the nine grahas stood, against the sidereal zodiac, at the moment and location of your birth. That part is astronomy: given a date, a time and a set of coordinates, there is exactly one correct answer, and it has been calculable for centuries.
What has always required a person is the reading — knowing that Saturn in the tenth house means one thing in a chart where Saturn is dignified and something quite different where it is not, and holding several classical opinions in mind at once. That is the part an AI now does here: it receives the computed chart as fact and explains it.
The distinction matters more than it sounds. A language model asked to produce planetary degrees will produce confident, plausible, wrong ones. Ask any AI astrology tool where its numbers come from before trusting a reading.
Three things: date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth.
Birth time carries more weight than most people expect. The Lagna — the sign rising on the eastern horizon — moves through all twelve signs in twenty-four hours, so it changes roughly every two hours. Get the time wrong by that much and the entire house structure shifts, which changes almost every house-based reading in the chart.
If you do not know your birth time, the chart is still worth generating: planetary positions by sign, your nakshatra, and your dasha timeline are all still correct, because those depend on the date rather than the hour. We mark the Lagna as approximate rather than presenting it as certain — a chart that quietly guesses is worse than one that admits what it does not know.
Positions come from a deterministic astronomical engine using the Lahiri ayanamsa, the sidereal correction adopted as the Indian national standard. Same inputs, same chart, every time — you can regenerate it a year from now and the planetary positions will be identical.
The engine produces the sidereal longitude of each graha, the ascendant from your coordinates and birth moment, the nakshatra and pada the Moon occupies, and the Vimshottari dasha sequence computed from that Moon position. Yogas and doshas are then detected by checking the classical conditions against those placements, rather than being asserted.
Both start from the same sky. They differ in where they put zero.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the March equinox — to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars. Because the Earth's axis precesses, those two reference points have drifted about 24 degrees apart over the last two thousand years.
The practical consequence: your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign earlier than the Western one you grew up with. A Western Leo is often a Vedic Karka. Neither system has made an arithmetic mistake — they are answering slightly different questions, and the gap between them is the ayanamsa.

Lagna and the twelve houses. The ascendant sets the frame; every house is counted from it. Each house governs an area of life, and which graha sits where is most of what a reading discusses.
Rashi and nakshatra. Your Moon sign is the rashi Vedic astrology reads a horoscope from — not the Sun sign, which is the Western convention. Your nakshatra is a finer division: twenty-seven lunar mansions, each of four padas.
The Vimshottari dasha timeline. A 120-year cycle of planetary periods, calculated from your Moon's nakshatra. This is the tradition's main timing device — which period you are in now, when it ends, and what comes next.
