Mars is a fiery, assertive planet, and these houses relate to self, family, home, marriage, longevity, and the marriage bed — which is why the placement is traditionally examined for its effect on married life.
The dosha is determined purely by the position of Mars at birth — nothing you did causes it, and it is present in a very large share of charts. It is counted from three reference points (Lagna, Moon, Venus), and many traditions consider it significant only from the Lagna and Moon.
Classical texts associate Manglik Dosha with friction, delays, or tension in marriage when a strongly Manglik person marries a non-Manglik one. The energy of Mars — heat, impatience, dominance — is said to need a compatible outlet. In practice, a great many happily married people are Manglik; the placement describes a temperament to manage, not a verdict.
Traditional remedies include marrying another Manglik (the doshas are said to cancel), Kumbh Vivah or Vishnu Vivah symbolic rituals, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and worshipping Hanuman on Tuesdays, wearing red coral (only after proper chart analysis), and charity of red items (masoor dal, red cloth) on Tuesdays. The most important remedy is a full chart match rather than a single-factor judgment.
Manglik Dosha is considered cancelled (Mangal Dosha Bhang) in many situations: when Mars is in its own sign or exalted, when Mars is aspected by or conjunct Jupiter or the Moon, when both partners are Manglik, at certain ages (traditions cite reduced effect after 28), and by numerous specific placements. Because cancellation is so common, a genuine assessment requires the whole chart.
The biggest myth is that Manglik Dosha dooms a marriage — it does not. It is one factor among dozens, frequently cancelled, and present in an enormous number of successful marriages. Fear-based readings that demand expensive remedies for a "severe" dosha are the thing to be most cautious about.
