Sun in the 6th House

Ripu Bhavaenemies, debts, disease, service, daily work

One of the Sun’s most effective placements and among the least glamorous. In the house of enemies, debt and service, it simply defeats what opposes it. Strong for competitive examinations, litigation, government service, medicine and anywhere an adversary must be faced down. The classical caution attaches to the father’s health rather than to the native’s own affairs.

Classical note: Dusthana, but an upachaya too — a malefic here often destroys the difficulty rather than suffering it.

The house and the graha

The 6th house is the obstacles you overcome by labour, governing enemies, debts, disease, service, daily work. Sun (Surya) is a mild malefic that burns as much as it illuminates and signifies soul, father, authority, vitality, government; its drive is to be seen, to lead, and to express a distinct self.

The house's nature

The 6th is a dusthana (difficult house), where planets deliver results through struggle, delay, or transformation. Interestingly, a malefic like Sun often performs *better* in a dusthana than a benefic would — classical astrology holds that malefics in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th (the upachaya houses) and in dusthanas can destroy the difficulty rather than suffer it.

What changes the reading

Three things modify this placement more than anything else: the sign Sun occupies (see Sun through the signs), the aspects it receives — Jupiter's aspect can rescue a difficult placement and Saturn's can sober an easy one — and the strength of the 6th house lord. Read this as one factor, not a verdict.
