Makar Sankranti marks the Sun’s entry into sidereal Capricorn and the beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun’s six-month northward journey considered the day-time of the gods. Unlike most Hindu festivals it follows the solar calendar, which is why its date barely moves year to year. It is celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri (the eve) in Punjab, and Uttarayan in Gujarat.
A holy bath at sunrise, charity of sesame and jaggery, flying kites, and the first harvest offerings define the day. Til-gud sweets are exchanged with the words “speak sweetly” — a reset of relationships for the new solar year.
