Maha Shivaratri, “the great night of Shiva,” observes the night Shiva is said to have performed the Tandava and, by other tellings, the night of his marriage to Parvati. It is the most important Shaiva observance of the year, kept as a night-long vigil rather than a daytime celebration.
Devotees fast through the day and keep jaagran (vigil) through the four prahars of the night, offering bael leaves, milk, and water on the Shivling with “Om Namah Shivaya.” The fast is broken after sunrise the next morning.
