Kartika Shukla Shashthi (four-day observance) · Deity: Surya & Chhathi Maiya
Thursday, November 4, 2027
Panchang that morning (IST): Shukla Shashthi tithi · Purva Ashadha pada 3 · Moon in Sagittarius
Chhath is the great Sun festival of Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern UP — four days of escalating austerity offered to Surya and Chhathi Maiya, standing waist-deep in water for the setting and rising sun. It is among the most demanding vratas in the Hindu calendar, and among the most moving to witness.
Nahay Khay, Kharna’s single evening meal, then the 36-hour nirjala fast spanning the evening arghya to the setting sun and the dawn arghya to the rising sun, offered from a river, pond, or any standing water.
Diaspora Chhath has grown remarkably — from the Hudson to the Thames, Bihari communities gather at riverbanks and beaches with full soop-and-daura arrangements. Local sunrise/sunset times define the arghyas.
