Level 5 · Lesson 2 of 6

Steps one and two — the frame

8 min · Goal: Assess a chart’s overall resilience and describe where its weight sits.

The Lagna lord as the chart’s constitution

Everything in a chart happens to someone, and the Lagna lord is that someone. Assess it exactly as Level 3 taught: sign and dignity, house, functional status, combustion, aspects received, conjunctions.

A Lagna lord that is strong, unafflicted and in a kendra or trikona gives a chart resilience. Difficulties elsewhere are survivable and often productive. A Lagna lord that is debilitated, combust and in a dushthana means the same difficulties land harder and take longer to recover from.

This single assessment changes the tone of everything that follows, which is why it comes first.

Where the weight sits

Nine planets across twelve houses cluster somewhere. Note which houses hold three or more, and which quadrant of the chart is busiest.

A chart weighted toward the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th describes a life of visible action. Weighted toward the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, it describes one that improves with sustained effort — the upachaya pattern, where the second half is generally better than the first. Weighted toward the 6th, 8th and 12th, it describes a life with more interior or hidden dimension than most, which is not the same as a harder one.

Being able to say "this is a chart that gets better after forty" is genuinely useful, and it comes from step two rather than from any individual placement.

Benefic and malefic distribution

Note where the natural benefics sit and where the malefics sit — but read both through functional status. A chart where the malefics occupy upachaya and dushthana houses while benefics hold kendras and trikonas is well arranged regardless of how it sounds described planet by planet.

The opposite arrangement — benefics in dushthanas, malefics in trikonas — is more complicated, and worth noticing before you interpret anything specific.

What not to conclude yet

Steps one and two produce a frame, not a reading. You should be able to say something like: a resilient chart, weighted toward the upachayas, with the malefics reasonably placed and a strong Lagna lord — and nothing yet about career, marriage or money.

Resisting the jump is the discipline. Everything specific comes from step three onward.

Try it with your own chart

Frame your own chart

  1. Assess your Lagna lord fully, using the seven checks from Level 3.
  2. Count how many planets sit in kendras, trikonas, dushthanas and upachayas.
  3. Note where your natural benefics and malefics fall, and whether that arrangement is favourable.
  4. Write three sentences describing the frame — resilience, weight, arrangement — with no specific life predictions in them.
