Mehndi is both an adornment and an entire function — the mehndi ceremony is often the longest and most relaxed evening of the wedding. Henna has genuine cooling properties, which is the practical layer beneath the ritual one, and it is considered auspicious in its own right.
Kerala calls it mailanchi; Rajasthani and Marwari designs are dense and figurative; Arabic-influenced styles are bolder and more open. The groom is given a small application in many traditions.
The well-known belief that a darker stain means a more loving husband or mother-in-law is folklore, and enjoyable as such. The actual depth of colour comes down to henna quality, how long the paste stays on, body heat and individual skin chemistry — nothing about anyone’s marriage. Worth mentioning because it can genuinely worry brides whose stain comes out light.
