Karn Phool

Also called Jhumka, Kammal, Sahara

What it is

Earrings, often heavy, and frequently supported by chains — the sahara — hooked into the hair to carry the weight.

What it signifies

Ear ornaments appear in some of the oldest descriptions of bridal adornment. The karnavedha, or ear-piercing rite, is itself one of the classical samskaras performed in childhood.

Across regions

The bell-shaped jhumka is common across the North; South Indian traditions favour the jimikki and elaborate temple-work studs.

Solah Shringar is a cultural tradition rather than a requirement — lists differ by region, and including or omitting any item is an ordinary family choice.
