Bangles worn in sets, traditionally of glass, lac, ivory, shell or gold depending on the community.
Bangles are among the strongest markers of married status in daily life. The sound they make is itself part of the tradition — a bride is heard as well as seen moving through the house.
Punjabi brides wear the red and white chooda, given by the maternal uncle and worn for a period after the wedding — commonly forty days to a year. Bengali brides wear shakha and pola, white conch-shell and red coral bangles. Gujarati and Rajasthani traditions favour ivory-coloured sets.
Glass bangles breaking is widely considered inauspicious. In practice they break constantly, which most families take in stride.
