A worked example

The chart

Libra Lagna. Venus, the Lagna lord, in the 10th house in Cancer. Saturn in the 4th in Capricorn, its own sign. Jupiter in the 9th in Gemini. Sun and Mercury together in the 11th in Leo. Moon in the 2nd in Scorpio. Mars in the 6th in Pisces. Rahu in the 3rd, Ketu in the 9th.

Read the steps in order rather than jumping to whatever looks interesting.

Steps one and two — the frame

Venus rules the Lagna and sits in the 10th, a kendra, which is a strong placement. It is in Cancer, a neutral sign — neither exalted nor debilitated. For a Libra Lagna, Venus rules the 1st and 8th, so it carries a dushthana rulership alongside the Lagna, which complicates it slightly. Overall: a resilient chart with a Lagna lord that is well placed but not unambiguous.

Weight: planets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th. That is three upachayas (3rd, 6th, 11th) plus a strong 9th and 10th. This is a chart that should improve substantially with age, with real strength in the dharma and career houses.

Saturn is yogakaraka for Libra, ruling the 4th and 5th — a kendra and a trikona — and it sits in its own sign in the 4th. That is the single most favourable feature here, and it was found by step two rather than by hunting for it.

Step three and four — a career question

The 10th house holds Venus, the Lagna lord — a genuinely good sign, since the person themselves is invested in their career. The 10th lord for Libra is the Moon, which sits in the 2nd in Scorpio, its debilitation sign. The karakas, Sun and Mercury, are together in the 11th in Leo, where the Sun is in its own sign.

So: strong house, strong karakas, debilitated lord. The factors disagree, and the disagreement has a shape. Career opportunity and visibility are well supported; the person’s own steady direction in it is less so. A plausible reading is a career that goes well but is not linear — periods of doubt about direction, changes of course, with the outward results still arriving.

Before concluding, check whether the debilitation is cancelled. The Moon is debilitated in Scorpio; Mars rules Scorpio and sits in the 6th, not a kendra from Lagna or Moon. On the common cancellation conditions, no clear neecha bhanga. So the weakness stands.

Step five and six — timing and synthesis

Timing belongs to Level 6, but note the shape: the strongest features here are Saturn as yogakaraka and Jupiter in the 9th, and the chart is upachaya-weighted. Both point toward a life whose better material arrives later. If the Saturn or Jupiter dashas run in the middle decades, that would corroborate strongly.

The honest synthesis: a resilient chart with real strength in career and dharma, a debilitated 10th lord suggesting the direction is found rather than known, and a shape that favours the second half of life. Notice what that does not say — nothing about income, job title, or whether any particular decision will work out.
