Silver rings worn on the second toe of each foot, put on during or shortly after the wedding.
Worn only by married women in most communities, and among the most consistently observed of the sixteen across regions. Ayurvedic tradition holds that the second toe connects to a nerve pathway related to reproductive health.
Called metti in Tamil and mettelu in Telugu, where they are often placed by the groom or by his sister during the ceremony.
The nerve-pathway explanation is traditional rather than clinically demonstrated, and is given here as the tradition’s own reasoning. Silver rather than gold, again, for the same reason as anklets.
