The 8th is a dusthana (difficult house), where planets deliver results through struggle, delay, or transformation. Interestingly, a malefic like Mars often performs *better* in a dusthana than a benefic would — classical astrology holds that malefics in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th (the upachaya houses) and in dusthanas can destroy the difficulty rather than suffer it.
Three things modify this placement more than anything else: the sign Mars occupies (see Mars through the signs), the aspects it receives — Jupiter's aspect can rescue a difficult placement and Saturn's can sober an easy one — and the strength of the 8th house lord.
