7 min · Goal: Identify any Mahapurusha yoga in a chart and judge its likelihood.
The Pancha Mahapurusha yogas share a single condition: a planet in its own sign or exalted, placed in a kendra from the Lagna. Five planets qualify — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The luminaries and the nodes are excluded, the nodes because they rule no signs and so can never be in their own.
Mars gives Ruchaka. Mercury gives Bhadra. Jupiter gives Hamsa. Venus gives Malavya. Saturn gives Shasha.
Ruchaka: physical courage, command, decisiveness — associated with soldiers, surgeons, athletes, and people who build things by force of will. Bhadra: intelligence, articulate speech, commercial and analytical skill. Hamsa: wisdom, moral standing, teaching, judgment. Malavya: artistic capacity, refined taste, comfort, and happiness in relationship. Shasha: authority earned through endurance, administration, command over people or resources.
Each describes the presence of a capacity, not a guarantee of its use. A Mahapurusha yoga says the raw material is there; it says nothing about whether the person did anything with it.
Bhadra is the most common by a clear margin, because Mercury is exalted in Virgo — a sign it also rules — so the two qualifying conditions overlap, and Mercury spends a good deal of its time near Gemini and Virgo anyway.
The others are rarer but not exotic. Each requires a specific planet in one of two or three particular signs and in one of four houses. Before accounting for the fact that planets are not evenly distributed, that is on the order of one chart in twelve per planet.
The honest summary: having one is genuinely notable and worth knowing. Being told you have one and immediately offered something to strengthen it is the familiar pattern.
Someone has Jupiter exalted in Cancer in the 5th house. Do they have Hamsa yoga?
