Vastra

Also called The bridal garment

What it is

The wedding garment itself — most often a lehenga or saree, and in some traditions a specific weave reserved for the occasion.

What it signifies

Colour carries the meaning. Red dominates North Indian weddings and is associated with Mars, vitality and auspiciousness; it is a colour of beginning rather than of romance.

Across regions

South Indian brides commonly wear gold-bordered Kanjeevaram silk; Bengali brides a red benarasi with white and red accents; Maharashtrian brides the nauvari, often in green or yellow, where green signifies new life; Gujarati brides the panetar and gharchola. Many contemporary brides wear pastels or non-red entirely, which no tradition forbids.

Solah Shringar is a cultural tradition rather than a requirement — lists differ by region, and including or omitting any item is an ordinary family choice.
