Nath

Also called Nathni, Mookuthi, Bulaq

What it is

A nose ring, often large, and in many traditions connected by a fine chain to the hair or ear.

What it signifies

Nose ornaments are among the most regionally distinctive of the sixteen. Ayurvedic tradition associates the left nostril piercing with reproductive health, which is one traditional explanation for the side chosen.

Across regions

The Maharashtrian nath has a distinctive paisley shape set with pearls; Punjabi traditions favour a large hoop; the Tamil mookuthi is typically a small stud, sometimes worn on both sides.

Worth knowing

The Ayurvedic rationale is traditional rather than clinically established. It is offered here as the reason the tradition gives, not as a medical claim.

Solah Shringar is a cultural tradition rather than a requirement — lists differ by region, and including or omitting any item is an ordinary family choice.
