Maang Tikka

Also called Borla, Mathapatti, Nethi Chutti

What it is

An ornament suspended from the hair and resting at the parting, held by a chain hooked into the hair.

What it signifies

Sits at the same point as the bindi, and is read in the same way — the pendant falling on the ajna. Some interpretations describe it as representing the union of two people and two families.

Across regions

The Rajasthani borla is spherical; the mathapatti spreads across the forehead in multiple chains; the Tamil nethi chutti is often worn as a set with sun and moon ornaments on either side of the parting.

Solah Shringar is a cultural tradition rather than a requirement — lists differ by region, and including or omitting any item is an ordinary family choice.
