Aarsi

Also called Arsi, Angoothi

What it is

Rings — and traditionally one particular ring, the aarsi: a thumb ring set with a small mirror.

What it signifies

The mirror had a specific purpose. A bride whose face was veiled could glance at the aarsi to see her groom, sometimes for the first time. It is the most quietly practical object among the sixteen, and the most poignant.

Across regions

The aarsi is associated especially with Mughal-influenced North Indian tradition. Many modern brides wear ordinary rings in its place.

Solah Shringar is a cultural tradition rather than a requirement — lists differ by region, and including or omitting any item is an ordinary family choice.
