Three of the eight kootas in Vedic marriage matching are decided entirely by your birth nakshatra — gana, yoni and nadi — and between them they carry 18 of the 36 points. Here is what Punarvasu brings to a match, and what the scoring does and does not mean.
Punarvasu belongs to the Deva gana. The three ganas — Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa — classify temperament rather than character, and the scoring rewards similarity. Two people of the same gana score the full 6 points; Deva with Rakshasa scores lowest.
The names invite more drama than they deserve. Rakshasa gana does not mean a difficult person — it describes a more forceful, self-directed temperament, and roughly a third of all nakshatras fall in it. It is one of the most misused labels in matchmaking.
Punarvasu carries the Sheep yoni. Each nakshatra is assigned an animal, and the koota scores physical and instinctive compatibility on how those animals relate. The same animal scores the full 4; traditional enemy pairs score zero.
Worth keeping in proportion: yoni carries 4 points of 36, the smallest weight after varna and vashya. A zero here is not a serious obstacle to a match with a strong total.
Punarvasu is M nadi. Nadi carries 8 points, more than any other koota, and two people sharing a nadi score zero — the condition called Nadi dosha.
This is where most matchmaking anxiety lives, so it deserves stating plainly. The classical texts list several recognised cancellations for Nadi dosha, including the couple sharing a rashi with different nakshatras, sharing a nakshatra with different padas, or the nakshatra lords being the same planet. A great many matches flagged for Nadi dosha are cancelled on examination, and a reading that names the dosha without checking for them is incomplete.
There are 8 other nakshatras sharing M nadi — a third of the total, since the 27 divide evenly into three. A factor affecting a third of all possible partners is common, not a curse.
These three kootas score 18 of 36 points and say nothing about the remaining five, nor about Manglik status, nor about either person’s dasha periods, nor about the two people involved.
