What Is a Kundli? Your Vedic Birth Chart, Explained Simply

A kundli (also spelled kundali, and called a janam kundli or Vedic birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It records where the Sun, Moon, and planets sat among the twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses — and in Vedic astrology, that snapshot is treated as the blueprint of your life: your temperament, relationships, career leanings, and the timing of major chapters.

If you grew up in an Indian family, you have probably seen one — a square diagram with diagonal lines that a family priest consulted before weddings, new ventures, or naming ceremonies. What was once hand-calculated from an ephemeris and a panchang can now be generated in seconds. What a kundli actually contains

Every kundli is built from three coordinates: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. From these, the chart derives your Lagna (the ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born), your Moon sign (Rashi), and your Nakshatra (the lunar mansion the Moon occupied). These three are the spine of every reading.

Around them sit the twelve houses, each governing an area of life — the first house is self and body, the seventh is marriage and partnership, the tenth is career and public standing, and so on. The nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu) fall into these houses, and the pattern of who sits where — and who aspects whom — is what an astrologer reads.

A complete kundli also includes your dasha timeline: the sequence of planetary periods (Mahadashas) that Vedic astrology uses for timing. Two people can carry similar charts yet live very different years, because they are running different dashas.

Why the birth time matters so much

The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and house positions shift with it. A birth time that is off by even thirty minutes can move planets into different houses and change the reading meaningfully. This is why a serious kundli always asks for time and place, not just the date. If you only know your approximate time, generate the chart with your best estimate — the Moon sign and Nakshatra usually remain stable across a few hours, so a large part of the reading still holds.

North Indian vs. South Indian chart styles

You may see the same kundli drawn two ways. The North Indian style is a diamond layout where houses stay fixed and signs rotate; the South Indian style is a fixed grid of signs where the Lagna is marked. Both contain identical information — the style is regional convention, not a different astrology.
