The definition

Mangal Dosha arises when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a kundli, counted from the Lagna (many traditions also check from the Moon and from Venus). Mars is the planet of heat, drive, and assertion; the flagged houses all touch marriage, home, intimacy, or longevity of partnership. The classical concern is that Martian intensity in those areas creates friction in married life.

When the dosha cancels or softens

Read functionally, Manglik placement describes a person who brings heat into close partnership — strong will, quick reactions, high standards, physical energy.
