Mahadasha Explained: The Planetary Periods in Your Kundli
Two people can have similar kundlis and completely different years — because charts describe potential, and dashas describe timing. The Vimshottari Mahadasha system is Vedic astrology’s master clock: a 120-year cycle in which each of the nine grahas takes a turn governing your life, activating whatever that planet promises in your birth chart.
How the cycle works
The sequence and lengths are fixed: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — totaling 120. Where you enter the cycle is set by your Janma Nakshatra: each lunar mansion is ruled by one of the nine planets, and you begin life partway through that planet’s period, with the remaining balance calculated from the Moon’s exact degree at birth.
Within each Mahadasha run nine sub-periods (Antardashas) in the same sequence, and within those, finer divisions still. In practice, most astrologers read the Mahadasha for the chapter of life and the Antardasha for the year’s texture.
Why the same dasha treats people differently
A dasha delivers what its planet promises in your chart. Saturn Mahadasha for someone with a strong, well-placed Saturn is nineteen years of steady building, discipline paying off, and authority earned. The same period over an afflicted Saturn is heavier — delays, tests, and lessons in patience. This is why generic "Rahu dasha is terrible" advice is meaningless: the verdict lives in your kundli, not in the planet’s reputation.
The transitions matter most
The junctions between Mahadashas — called dasha sandhi — are traditionally the most turbulent windows, as one planetary agenda winds down and another takes over. Career changes, relocations, relationship shifts, and health events cluster at these seams. Knowing your transition dates in advance is one of the most practical things a kundli can give you.
