Ask what an Indian wedding costs and you will hear everything from a few lakh to a few crore — and all of it is true. The useful question is not the total but the structure: which categories eat the budget, and which decisions move the number most. Those answers are surprisingly consistent across budgets.

The two decisions that set your budget

Guest count and number of functions determine most of the total before a single vendor is booked. Catering is priced per plate and venues are priced by capacity, so 400 guests across five catered functions is not one wedding — it is five events for 400. Trimming the guest list by a quarter, or merging the haldi and mehndi into one afternoon, moves the budget more than any amount of vendor negotiation.

Where the money actually goes

A typical full wedding splits roughly like this: catering 25–35%, venue 15–20%, décor and flowers 10–15%, outfits and trousseau 10–15%, jewelry (often held separately as a family purchase) 10–20%, photography and video 5–8%, with music, pandit, transport, invitations, gifts, and guest logistics filling the rest. Percentages shift by city and community, but the ranking rarely does: food first, venue second.

Two lines are chronically underestimated: guest travel and accommodation for outstation family, and the miscellaneous buffer. Planners hold 8–10% aside as buffer — do the same, and treat it as spent from day one.
