How to Read Your Kundli: Lagna, Moon Sign, and Nakshatra
Most people generate a free kundli, see a grid of abbreviations, and stop. The chart looks technical, but reading one is a learnable skill — and the first pass only requires three things: your Lagna, your Moon sign, and your Nakshatra. Everything else in the chart is elaboration on those anchors.
Start with the Lagna (ascendant)
The Lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It sets the frame of the whole chart: it becomes your first house, and every other house counts from it. The Lagna describes your outward temperament, physical constitution, and the general approach you take to life. A Virgo Lagna person meets the world analytically; an Aries Lagna person meets it head-on.
Because the Lagna also fixes which planet "rules" your chart (the lord of the rising sign), knowing your Lagna lord and where it sits is the single most information-dense fact in the kundli.
Then the Moon sign (Rashi)
In Vedic astrology the Moon carries more weight than the Sun. Your Rashi — the sign the Moon occupied at birth — describes your inner emotional life, your instincts, and your mind. It is also the reference point for most traditional predictions: when a panchang or a daily horoscope refers to your sign, it means your Moon sign, not the Western Sun sign you grew up reading in newspapers.
Then your Nakshatra
The zodiac is also divided into 27 lunar mansions called Nakshatras, each about 13 degrees wide. Your Janma Nakshatra — the one the Moon occupied — refines the Moon sign into something much more specific. Two people can both be Cancer Moons, but a Pushya-born and an Ashlesha-born will feel noticeably different. The Nakshatra also determines the starting point of your dasha sequence, which is why matchmakers and priests always ask for it.
Reading houses and planets together
Once the anchors are clear, read the chart house by house. Find which planets occupy which houses and ask two questions of each: is the planet comfortable there (own sign, exalted, debilitated?), and which houses does it rule? A benefic planet in the tenth house colors the career; Saturn aspecting the seventh house shapes how partnership matures. You do not need to memorize hundreds of rules — patterns of strength and pressure emerge quickly once you look.
Finally, check your current Mahadasha. The chart is the terrain; the dasha is where on the map you are standing right now. A tough placement may be dormant for decades until its period arrives — and a promising one delivers when its time comes.
