But a kundli is calculated from three inputs, and each one unlocks a different layer of the chart. Here is what the date gives you, what the time adds, and why the place matters more than people expect.

What the date of birth alone gives you

From the date alone, an astrologer can fix the positions of the slow-moving planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — and usually the Sun sign. On most days the Moon sign can also be determined, though the Moon changes signs roughly every two and a quarter days, so on transition days the date alone is ambiguous. That means a date-only kundli can speak broadly about generational placements and often your Rashi, but it cannot place anything in houses.

What the time of birth adds

The birth time determines the Lagna, which changes sign about every two hours. The Lagna fixes the house grid — and houses are where astrology becomes personal. Without the time, the chart cannot say which area of life a planet influences: the same Saturn could be shaping your career (tenth house) or your marriage (seventh) depending on the hour you were born. The time also pins down the Moon degree precisely, which sets your Nakshatra and your exact dasha balance at birth.

If your birth time is unknown, all is not lost. Use noon as a neutral estimate, read the Moon sign and planetary strengths (which barely change within a day), and treat house-based statements with caution. Families often recover approximate times from hospital records, elder memory tied to daily events, or the traditional practice of noting the time for the naming ceremony.

Why the place of birth matters

The place converts the local birth time into the actual position of the horizon — the same clock time in Mumbai and in New Jersey produces different Lagnas. Latitude and longitude also affect house sizes in some systems. This is why every serious kundli form asks for the city of birth: it is not bureaucracy, it is astronomy.
