How to read a dasha

The mistake almost everyone makes

People hear "Saturn mahadasha" and brace for nineteen difficult years. That is reading the planet’s reputation instead of the chart, and it is wrong often enough to be useless.

A dasha delivers what that planet actually does in that specific chart. For a Libra Lagna, Saturn is the yogakaraka; its mahadasha is frequently the best nineteen years of the life. For an Aries Lagna, Saturn rules the 10th and 11th but is debilitated in Aries and functionally awkward — a different proposition entirely.

What to check, in order

Which houses does the dasha lord rule for this Lagna? Those are the areas that become active. A dasha of the 7th lord brings partnership matters forward whatever else it does.

Where is it placed, and in what dignity? An exalted lord in a kendra delivers its significations well; a debilitated combust one struggles.

Is it a functional benefic or malefic for this Lagna? This outweighs its natural classification.

What does it aspect and what aspects it? A dasha lord receiving Jupiter’s aspect runs more smoothly than one under Saturn’s.

What is it karaka for? Those significations activate alongside the house rulerships.

The house from the Moon

A second layer that practitioners weigh: where the dasha lord sits counted from the Moon, not only from the Lagna. A dasha lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon is traditionally read as more demanding regardless of its position from the Lagna.

Schools weight this differently. Note it as a consideration rather than a rule.

What a dasha does not do

It does not cause events. The tradition’s claim is that a period emphasises certain significations — makes them live, brings them forward — not that it manufactures outcomes.

So the honest form of a dasha statement is: during this period, matters of these houses are likely to be prominent. Not: in this period you will get married, lose your job, or buy a house. The first is what the method supports; the second is what sells.
