Guru — Jupiter

Signifies wisdom, teaching, dharma, expansion, children, wealth, and the guru. It rules Sagittarius and Pisces, is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn.

Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic, and it protects whatever it occupies or aspects. This is why Jupiter aspecting a difficult house is a genuinely mitigating factor, and one of the first things a practitioner checks when a placement looks worrying.

It expands what it touches — which is favourable for houses of growth and less so for houses where restraint would help. Jupiter in the 6th can expand debts; Jupiter in the 12th can expand expenditure. Expansion is not always a gift.

Shukra — Venus

Signifies marriage, relationship, beauty, art, comfort, luxury, and vehicles. It is the kalatra karaka — the significator of the spouse — for everyone regardless of gender. It rules Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo.

For marriage questions Venus is checked alongside the 7th house and its lord. An afflicted Venus is read as strain in relationship and in comfort generally, though as always this is one factor among several and never sufficient on its own.

Venus is also the karaka of the material pleasures, which classical texts treat with some ambivalence — favourable for enjoyment, a distraction from moksha. That tension runs through a great deal of Venus interpretation.

Shani — Saturn

Signifies discipline, endurance, delay, longevity, service, and old age. It rules Capricorn and Aquarius, is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries.

Saturn has the worst reputation and deserves the most rehabilitation. It is the planet of things that take time and then last. A strong Saturn produces careers built slowly that do not collapse, and authority earned rather than granted. The difficulty is that its rewards arrive late, and its method is restriction.

It is also the significator of longevity — Saturn in the 8th, the house of lifespan, is classically read as indicating a long life. Almost every beginner reads that combination as ominous and gets it backwards.

Sade Sati, Saturn’s seven-and-a-half year transit over the Moon, is the most fear-marketed transit in Jyotish. It is a demanding period in the tradition; it is not a catastrophe, roughly a quarter of people are in it at any time, and it recurs about every thirty years.
