Level 3 · Lesson 2 of 8

Benefics and malefics

7 min · Goal: Classify any planet as benefic or malefic, both naturally and for a given Lagna.

The natural classification

Natural benefics: Jupiter, Venus, well-placed Mercury, and a waxing Moon. Natural malefics: Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu, Ketu, and a waning Moon.

The labels are older than they are precise, and they mislead beginners badly. A malefic is not a bad planet. It is one whose method is harsh — pressure, restriction, separation, force. Saturn is the significator of discipline and endurance; there is nothing evil about it.

The two that change

The Moon is a benefic when waxing and a malefic when waning, on the reasoning that a growing Moon is nourishing and a dark one is depleted. Some texts narrow this further — only the Moon within a certain distance of the Sun counts as weak.

Mercury is a benefic when alone or with benefics, and takes on the character of whatever it sits with. Mercury with Saturn behaves more like Saturn. This adaptability is the whole of Mercury’s nature: it signifies the intellect, which takes the colour of what it engages with.

Functional benefics — the more useful idea

Here is where beginners gain real ground. A planet’s natural classification matters less than which houses it rules in *your* chart. That is called functional status, and it depends entirely on your Lagna.

The principle: a planet ruling a trikona — the 1st, 5th or 9th — becomes a functional benefic for you regardless of its nature. A planet ruling a dushthana — the 6th, 8th or 12th — becomes functionally difficult regardless of how gentle it naturally is.

So for a Taurus Lagna, Saturn rules the 9th and 10th and is a strong functional benefic despite being a natural malefic. For a Cancer Lagna, Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th and is genuinely mixed despite being the greatest natural benefic. This is why the same planet can be described very differently in two readings and both be correct.

Yogakaraka

One special case worth knowing. When a single planet rules both a kendra and a trikona, it is called a yogakaraka and is treated as exceptionally favourable for that Lagna, since it embodies the kendra–trikona relationship in one body.

Saturn is yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra Lagnas. Mars is yogakaraka for Cancer and Leo. Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. If one of these is your Lagna, that planet deserves particular attention in your chart.

Try it with your own chart

Find your functional benefics

  1. Note your Lagna from Level 1.
  2. Using your house-lord list from Level 2, identify which planets rule your 1st, 5th and 9th houses. Those are your functional benefics.
  3. Now identify the rulers of your 6th, 8th and 12th. Those need more care in reading.
  4. Check whether any single planet rules both a kendra and a trikona for you — if so, you have a yogakaraka.
  5. Note where any natural malefic turns out to be a functional benefic for you. That is usually the most useful discovery in this lesson.
