The link between intelligence and children makes sense in the traditional logic: both are what you produce. Speculation and gambling are also assigned here, which is why the 5th is read for anything where you put something out hoping it returns multiplied. Jupiter signifies children; Mercury the intellect.
Enemies, disease, debt, litigation, and daily service. It is classified as a dushthana — a difficult house — and yet it is also an upachaya, which improves with time.
That double classification is the key to reading it. The 6th is where you meet opposition, and a strong malefic here does not suffer the difficulty; it defeats it. Mars or Saturn in the 6th is traditionally excellent for competition, litigation, medicine and any work that involves overcoming something. This is one of the first places where the beginner’s instinct — malefic in a bad house must be terrible — turns out to be wrong.
Marriage and the spouse, but more broadly all partnership and all dealing with the public. Business partners, clients, open enemies, and negotiation all live here. It is the house directly opposite the Lagna: what you are not, and therefore what you seek.
Venus is its natural significator for everyone. In classical practice Jupiter signifies the husband in a woman’s chart. The 7th is also a maraka house, associated with the end of life, which sits oddly beside marriage until you remember these are traditional groupings rather than logical ones.

Its reputation is worse than it deserves. The 8th is where things change form rather than simply where things go wrong, and it is the house of genuine depth. Researchers, surgeons, investigators, therapists and occultists frequently have strong 8th houses. Saturn is its natural significator, and Saturn placed here is classically read as indicating long life rather than the opposite.
