Nine planets are spread across twelve houses, so most houses in most charts are empty. If you could only read houses that contain planets, you could say nothing about two-thirds of a life.
House lords solve this. Every house is ruled by the planet that rules the sign occupying it, and that planet carries the house’s affairs with it wherever it sits. An empty house is read through the condition and placement of its lord.
Look at which sign occupies the house, then identify that sign’s ruling planet. Aries and Scorpio belong to Mars, Taurus and Libra to Venus, Gemini and Virgo to Mercury, Cancer to the Moon, Leo to the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces to Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius to Saturn.
If your 7th house is Libra, Venus is your 7th lord, and wherever Venus sits is where your partnership matters play out.
The core technique of house-lord reading is simple enough to state in one line: the lord of house A placed in house B connects the affairs of A to the affairs of B.
The 10th lord in the 7th suggests a career conducted through partnership or public dealing. The 7th lord in the 12th suggests a partner connected with foreign places, or a marriage with a private or distant quality. The 2nd lord in the 11th connects family wealth to gains and networks.
These read as suggestions rather than facts, and they need the rest of the chart to be trusted. But the sentence-building method is exactly how practitioners actually work through a chart, and you can start doing it today.
A lord in a kendra or trikona, in its own sign or exalted, generally supports the house it rules. A lord in a dushthana, debilitated, or combust by proximity to the Sun generally struggles to deliver that house’s significations.
One important qualifier: a lord in a dushthana is not the same as the house being ruined. It typically means the affairs of that house arrive with difficulty, take longer, or come through unusual routes. Level 3 covers dignity properly — for now, note strength and move on.
Because seven planets rule twelve signs, most planets rule two houses. Mars might be your 3rd and 10th lord simultaneously, which means it links those two areas whatever else it does.
This is where reading gets genuinely intricate, and where practitioners disagree. A planet ruling one favourable and one difficult house is read differently by different schools. Do not expect to resolve that now — simply note when a planet is wearing two hats.
